Pharmacy Tech, Lead (FT) Days - Abingdon, VA

SCOPE OF POSITION The Pharmacy Lead Technician, working under the supervision and instruction of the pharmacists and pharmacy management, performs procedures and duties relating to the service's Scope of Care.  This includes oversight of technicians and pharmacy workflow, preparation of both sterile and non-sterile medication dosage forms (including chemotherapy), automated dispensing functions, purchasing activities and special project assignments.  For successful job performance, the pharmacy technician should be flexible and show keen attention to detail, exhibit initiative and be willing to work as part of a team.  In addition, this individual should be cooperative and willing to cross train to fill in for other employees as necessary.  The technician must be able to provide services as appropriate (under the direct supervision of a pharmacist) to meet the needs of neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient age groups served at all Ballad Health facilities.

Increased Skills/functionalities/assignments performed by the Pharmacy Lead Technician can include, but aren't limited to:
A. Expected to conduct and document training and orientation of all new or transferred Level I, II, and III Pharmacy Technician 
B. Assisting management to ensure all technician related human resources, state, federal, Joint Commission, CMS, Pharmacy Policies and Procedures, and other regulatory activities are complete
C. Automated Dispensing System Administrative Support
D. Controlled Substance Handling/Dispensing Processes
E. Materials Management Functions
F. Specialty Compounding Functions
G. Scheduling of technicians 
H. Patient Billing/Charging Functions I. Changing operational workflow based on patient need
J. General oversight of pharmacy technician functions

The team member may be expected to be cross-trained for provision of services at any of the facilities throughout Ballad Health. 

He/She should support the Ballad Health Mission, Vision, and Values and shall be committed to the improvement of care quality via the organization's Performance Improvement Initiatives.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
This individual should possess basic math and typing skills and must possess attention to detail and the ability to read and follow written instructions.  The pharmacy technician should possess the ability to complete minimal computer functions.

Minimum of 5 years of previous experience as a Pharmacy Technician. Institutional pharmacy experience is required, while retail pharmacy experience may be beneficial.   Preference will be given to trained institutional pharmacy technicians, those individuals who have completed pharmacy technician training courses and/or those who have obtained (national) Certified Pharmacy Technician status.  

  • Valid and active Pharmacy Technician certification in appropriate state
  • National Certified Pharmacy Technician Certification
  • NPTA Hazardous Compounding certification (within 6 months if applicable to site)

Controlled Substance Diversion Training and Hazardous Drug Management training must be completed within 30 days of hire and annually.Completion of required IV Room competencies and training including Critical Point & Simplifi 797 IV training, media-fill and fingertip testing.
