SCOPE OF POSITION
The RN - Nurse Manager is a professional nurse who is responsible for the 24-hour operations and accountability of a designated clinical area to support patient/family focused, high performance/high commitment care by: defining and achieving standards for quality patient care; maintaining regulatory requirements; developing, managing, and evaluating area based work team performance. Participates in development and maintenance of policy and procedures and is accountable for compliance with all pertinent JCAHO Standards along with local, state, and federal regulations.
The RN - Nurse Manager applies knowledge of nursing and management systems of patient care, personnel development, fiscal and unit operations, performance improvement, and program development. This individual promotes innovation and excellence in clinical, service and team performance. Demonstrates the use of innovative ideas to increase productivity and reduce costs. Works to implement and evaluate systems that promote cost effective quality patient care. This position will involve the necessity of critical thinking skills in the implementation of all phases of the nursing process.
Management responsibility includes system, process, materials, fiscal, and human resources. Duties include comprehensive operational/fiscal day to day responsibility with emphasis on patient and team member satisfaction and retention. Interviews and hires staff for area and implements strategies to retain staff. Supporting , counseling, and empowering the unit team members are key functions to interfacing resources within the patient care delivery model. Provides leadership and guidance to assure that team members practice within established MSHA standards. Demonstrates knowledge of scope of role responsibility and licensure for all team members in area of responsibility. Evaluates and facilitates team member staffing resources to provide optimum patient care based on patient's needs and acuity. The Nurse Manager supports and promotes the policies and philosophies of Mountain States Health Alliance in all daily activities. As part of the well-coordinated team, the Nurse Manager collaborates with the medical staff, administration, and other support departments to achieve the patient and family-care objectives . Manages the daily operations of the nursing units including, personnel management, environmental monitoring, performance improvement, risk management, follow up on patient complaints and compliments, and helps assure that short-term problems are satisfactorily handled. Maintains positive customer relations as well as ensures the departments as a whole provide excellent customer service.
Supports and promotes Shared Leadership structure and professional nursing team member involvement in activities at the unit level. Creates unit based teams to develop innovative practices to improve patient care provision at the department level. Facilitates team member attendance and participation in hospital and system work group activities.
Facilitates continuing education of team members related to new technology and practice change through implementation of research and evidenced based literature. Promotes team member enrollment and attendance in continuing education.
In the absence of a RN may be required to function in the role of staff RN to support patient care provision . Maintains RN licensure for state of practice, CPR certification, and competency for the RN role. The nurse is expected to practice autonomously within the scope of professional standards, the rules, and regulations established by the appropriate state's Board of Nursing, and knowledge of policies and procedures within Mountain States Health Alliance. He/she demonstrates skill in developing and guiding collaborative collegial practice that delivers safe competent care based on meticulous application of the nursing process. He/she demonstrates sensitivity and understanding of the diverse cultural backgrounds of patients and caregivers. The position involves maintaining current knowledge of evidence based nursing practice and the ability to demonstrate critical thinking skills in the implementation of all phases of the nursing process. The RN serves as a professional role model as a caregiver, mentor, teacher and resource for peers and other providers. He/she demonstrates competency in the care of (circle all that apply): Neonate, Infant, Child, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric patient.
The RN - Nurse Manager actively participates in patient care quality and performance improvement through data collections, aggregation and analysis of relevant key indicators of quality (KIQ's). This commitment to quality results in the development and implementation of actions plans to include the monitoring of the effectiveness of improvements (Hold the Gains).

MSHA expects all team members to support the VOS initiative by demonstrating awareness of the VOS system and effectively applying it to his/her work.

Job duties of this position may require access to protected patient information (PHI). The team member will be accountable for appropriate use of the record and compliance with all confidentiality and security policy and procedures related to use, access, and disclosure of PHI.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
The RN - Nurse Manager supervises all personnel assigned to their area. Reports to the Director to which they are assigned. In the absence of the Director, reports to the CNO or the Vice President of the assigned zones. Coordinates activity of shift leaders and all ancillary staff assigned to areas. Works collaboratively with all departments to develop internal/external customer relationships, which will enhance patient care.

EDUCATION EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in nursing required. Must be licensed in the appropriate state to practice professional nursing. Minimum of three years clinical experience as a Registered Nurse required. At least two years of supervisory experience is preferred. Certification in clinical specialty is preferred .
Demonstrated managerial competency. Evidence includes: effective communication and interpersonal skills within the interdisciplinary care environment; the ability to problem solve; to appropriately confront issues; to motivate others as individuals and as a group; and to plan, organize and direct the activities of others .

CONTINUING EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Plans and conducts a minimum of two hours of job related educational programs .
2. Obtains 24 hours educational credit.
3. Identifies relevant patient care and/or nursing practice KIQ's (key indicators of quality). This is achieved by using PDCA methodology and the appropriate data collection, aggregation, analysis and trending in the demonstration of measurable improvement outcomes.
