Lab Assistant/Phlebotomist

**Job Description:**

Functions as part of a dynamic and engaging laboratory team in a professional setting. This position facilitates laboratory organization and patient care, working closely with doctors, nurses, and medical laboratory scientists. LA Is are responsible for ordering and preparing patient samples, such as blood and other body fluids, and delivering specimens to the appropriate department or testing facility. Caregivers in this role will gain valuable experience and knowledge to help prepare them for workplace and career advancement.

As a Non-Certified Lab Assistant, you need to perform the following:

Perform specimen procedures and collection procedures as required. Perform venipuncture for adults, children and infants, including micro-collection techniques as required. Receive and enter orders as appropriate. Enter patient data in test requisitions. Receive, label and deliver specimens. Process specimens for send out to referral laboratories. Monitor computer errors and maintenance of hardware and enter results for referred specimens.

Research and resolve any questionable patient orders. Perform and review tests for accuracy and completeness. Assist in maintaining the laboratory section to CLIA, CAP and Joint Commission standards and regulatory requirements. Perform proficiency testing as required by accreditation agencies. Document and communicate information thoroughly and accurately.

Utilize equipment according to departmental guidelines, maintaining all equipment as per guidelines. Ensure equipment and supplies are maintained in appropriate working order. Evaluate and utilize inventory appropriately, assist with inventory control as needed.

Assist with maintaining filing systems of slides, blocks, specimens, reports, requisitions. Prepare reagents and chemicals as needed. Utilize clerical skills to perform job functions with minimal errors. Handle specimens / slides / logs / worklists appropriately and with confidentiality. Assist with point of care testing, reception, front desk, and phlebotomy duties as assigned. Assist/perform patient registration duties as assigned. Process and prepare specimens for screening. Appropriately utilize stains, fixative and reagents.

Maintain a neat and clean work area. Dispose of waste appropriately. Clean bench areas and equipment. Restock supplies as appropriate. Maintain the washroom and perform washroom functions as appropriate. Promote mission, vision, and values of SCL Health, and abide by service behavior standards. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Required:

High School Diploma or equivalent

Preferred:

CLMA (AMT) (Certified Medical Lab Assistant) OR MLA (ASCP) (Medical Lab Assistant) certification

Laboratory work experience (On the job training available)

Data entry skills and phlebotomy skills

**Physical Requirements:**

Physical Requirements: Interact with others requiring the employee to verbally communicate information. Operate computers and complex and delicate lab equipment requiring the ability to move fingers and hands. See and read lab equipment, monitors, and documents. Remain sitting or standing for long periods of time to perform work on a computer or other equipment.

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience.

$20.75 - $30.54
