Caregivers on Mentor Hospital's Med/Surg Unit provide care to adult patients with a variety of medical issues or patients preparing for or recovering from surgery. Med/surg caregivers care for a broad spectrum of patients, giving them a vast and broad clinical skillset.

**A caregiver in this position works varying shifts from 6:30am - 7:00pm or 6:30pm - 7:00am.**

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

+ Assist with direct and indirect patient care for one to two patients, such as rooming, vital signs, weight and pulse oximetry. If assigned to a closed unit, you will observe three to four patients.

+ Assure patient safety by ensuring that catheters, tubes or other medical equipment have not been removed or disconnected.

+ Accompany and assist patients at all times, including transport, tests, transfers, ambulation.

+ Identify and report changes in patient status to an RN or physician.

+ Complete all documentation and provide hand-off communication to caregivers responsible for the patient.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

+ A high school diploma or GED.

+ Completion of a hospital based patient companion training program OR equivalent experience OR enrollment at an accredited school of nursing and completion of a nursing fundamentals course or completion of a hospital-based NA/PC orientation.

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

+ Heartsaver level of Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA). If you do not hold this certification, you must obtain it within three months of hire.

+ Knowledge and understanding of basic patient care activities, such as basic hygiene, skin care and vital signs.

**Physical Requirements:**

+ Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking.

+ Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

+ Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.

**Personal Protective Equipment:**

+ Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
