Retail Market Clerk

Position Summary:

The Retail Market Clerk is a key member of the Campus Dining Team within the Division of Administration at Vanderbilt University. The Retail Market Clerk is responsible for providing great customer service while assisting customers with in store and online orders and managing the guest check-out process through point of sale and online platforms in the markets and dining locations across campus. This position is also responsible for reading online tickets, handpicking items, preparing orders for customer pickup, bagging items purchased through point of sale and online platforms, validating accuracy of order maintaining stock levels and placing orders as needed.

About the Campus Dining Department:

Vanderbilt Campus Dining takes pride in the culinary creations served from our kitchens. Our Dining program is highly decorated, the winner of many prestigious awards in the food service industry, including Best On-Site Food Service Operation in the Nation, Best Food Service Operator, the prestigious Ivy Award, and many more. We have main dining centers, restaurants and cafes, convenience stores, and we employ over 300 employees.

Key Functions and Expected Performance:

Receive, fill and package merchandise for online customer orders with accuracy

Examine all handpicked online customer order items for quality and freshness before bagging them for customer pickup

Operate a point of sale device while adhering to Vanderbilt Campus Dining cash handling regulations

Assist with food and beverage preparation as needed

Serve food to customers

Complete production and log sheets as assigned (including taking and logging food temperatures)

Receive, stock and price merchandise (this requires stocking a cooler)

Keep product front-faced and organized

Maintain and stock food and beverage stations following the “first in/first out” process

Lead by example and follow customer service standards outlined in the employee handbook.

Works in a team-driven environment, takes direction, delegates tasks and assists with problem-solving

Understands Vanderbilt Campus Dining Meal Plans and has the ability to explain the guidelines of the plan to customers

Maintains quality, safety and sanitary standards of State and City Health Departments and Vanderbilt Campus Dining codes

Maintains clean and orderly work area and complete other general cleaning duties

Reports to management any safety hazards and equipment in need of repair

Provide on-the-job training to new hires

Perform all other duties as assigned and/or when needed

Supervisory Relationships:

This position does not have supervisory; this position reports administratively and functionally to the unit’s management team and chef.

Qualifications:

High School Education or equivalent preferred

Food Handler Certified preferred

6 months previous customer service and food service experience required

6 months experience operating a point-of-sale device required

Excellent customer service

Great interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment

Must be able to understand and follow directions

Ability to read documents

Be self-motivated and disciplined

Ability to bend, stoop and kneel while stocking shelves

Must be able to safely operate all kitchen equipment

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and frequently lift, push, pull, or carry up to 30 lbs.

Ability to walk or stand for extended time periods, up to 6 hours

Involves repetitive motion

Requires frequent lifting/transporting hot food items
