Research Scientist - Ceramics

**Job Description Summary**

As a Research Scientist for Ceramics in the Materials Organization of the GE Aerospace Research Center you will conduct research on developing advanced ceramic materials and processes for a broad range of current and future GE Aerospace products. Areas of focus include 3D printed ceramics, ceramic matrix composites (CMCs), thermal and environmental barrier coatings (TBCs and EBCs) for extreme environments, and functional ceramics for sensors and coatings.

**Job Description**

**Roles and Responsibilities**

+ Conduct basic and applied research in processes for advanced ceramics of interest to GE Aerospace and external funding agencies

+ Develop novel advanced ceramics for various GE Aerospace products including but not limited to Civil and Military products and transition these technologies to application

+ Develop manufacturing processes for new and existing advanced ceramics in a lab and production environment

+ Identify technology trends in advanced ceramics and develop technical roadmaps to address them

+ Collaborate with GE Aerospace's internal product departments, global R&D sites, external and internal material developers, strategic suppliers, and universities

+ Characterize and identify degradation modes and approaches for improving the lifetime of advanced ceramics in extreme environments

+ Prepare research proposals for external funding

+ Invent and patent when appropriate

+ Deliver effective presentations, reports, publications to GE Aerospace Research, GE Aerospace, government agencies, and professional societies when appropriate

**Required Qualifications**

+ PhD in Materials Science and Engineering or related discipline or Master’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering or related discipline with a minimum of five years of experience.

+ Demonstrated expertise in ceramic development and processing

+ Demonstrated expertise of ceramic property-process-microstructure relationships

+ Demonstrated ability to learn new areas of research

+ Willing to work government funded programs

+ Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals, now or in the future, for this job opening.

**Desired Characteristics**

+ Experience in material and process development for bulk ceramics, additive ceramics, porous ceramics, ceramic matrix composites, environmental barrier coatings, or thermal barrier coatings

+ Experience in characterization and testing of structural or functional ceramics

+ Experience in chemical vapor deposition or chemical vapor infiltration

+ Very good understanding of thermodynamics, degradation kinetics, phase stability, and diffusion in high temperature material systems

+ Experience transferring technology from the laboratory to commercialization

+ Experience working on government contracts and preparing proposals

+ Experience with statistical analysis, data analytics, and statistical process control

+ Passion for hands on development and laboratory work

+ Demonstrated ability to adapt to multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced dynamic working environment

+ Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems

+ Demonstrated excellence in research through peer reviewed publications

+ Excellent oral and written communication skills
