Lease Civil, Structural, Architecture (CSA) Engineer

Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. We are looking for a passionate, high-energy Lease Civil, Structural, Architecture (CSA) Engineer to help build the cloud datacenters that power the world’s largest online services.

The CSA Engineer will be able to drive the design of all aspects of the physical networking infrastructure effectively and efficiently during design and address any design-related issues that arise during construction for all Microsoft datacenters/co-location facilities.

This role is located either in one or all hub locations - Atlanta, GA, Washington, D.C., Redmond, WA, San Antonio, TX or Phoenix, AZ.

Relocation support will be provided, and successful candidates will need to relocate or reside within 50 miles of the hub office location.

**Responsibilities**

The Lease Civil, Structural, Architecture (CSA) Engineer will have critical facility design experience, working knowledge of architecture/civil/structural design standards, experience site selection and due diligence and master planning for data centers, and design and peer review experience. This position requires a collaborative person who can demonstrate technical expertise combined with the ability to effectively communicate results of technical design reviews and direction to our A/E partners for multiple and concurrent data center design projects.

**Design and Design Oversight:**

The successful candidate will design spatial infrastructure for Lease Datacenter project buildouts, special projects, and retrofit upgrades, addressing any issues during construction. They will assess existing facilities to ensure compliance with Microsoft standards. The role involves collaborating with partners, leading design work groups, and conducting cross-functional meetings for multiple projects.

+ The civil-structural-architectural (CSA) requirements of the lease portfolio, special project design, retrofits and upgrades of existing facilities.

+ Give technical direction to our vendors (including professional civil engineers, architects and structural engineers), support technical growth, and the facilitation and delivery of Microsoft’s industry-leading datacenter designs.

+ Collaborate with internal and external customers and partners, utilizing tools and proper documentation for all team members to fully understand their role within the project. This collaboration aims to create or oversee the creation of datacenter telecommunication designs from an integrated Scope of Services and Basis of Design (BOD) to Issue for Construction (IFC). Candidate will also collaboratively manage the Construction Administration phase of the datacenter until handover for new Lease DC project build-outs, special projects, and network upgrades with other discipline leads.

+ Partner directly with cross organizational teams such as engineering design teams, delivery teams, operations teams, contractors and suppliers.

+ Lead the direction of the CSA technical delivery and oversee the delivery of multiple, concurrent, complete Datacenter design solutions aligned with the scopes, schedules and budgets of the projects.

+ Identify opportunities to affect downstream execution of projects by resolving issues and implementing design tradeoffs within scope.

+ Apply best practice in Health & Safety throughout the project lifecycle.

**Qualifications**

**Required Qualifications:**

+ 7+ years of technical architecture or engineering experience

+ OR Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience

+ OR Master's degree in Architecture, Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years of technical engineering experience

+ OR Doctorate degree in Architecture, Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field or related field.

**Other Requirements:**

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

+ **Microsoft Cloud Background Check** : This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

**Preferred Qualifications** :

+ 10+ years of technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Structrual Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years of technical engineering experience

+ OR Master's degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Structrual Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years of technical engineering experience

+ OR Doctorate degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Structrual Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years of technical engineering experience.

+ Registered Architect or Professional Engineer  

+ Familiarity with ground-up construction, greenfield and brownfield site development requirements.

+ Action-oriented with a passion for getting things done quickly, efficiently, and effectively.

+ Ability to balance varying responsibilities that span rhythm of business, communications, executive management, and culture.

+ 6+ years of large-scale facility networking infrastructure projects within datacenters or other comparable experience (healthcare, enterprise, large retail, critical environments, healthcare, government etc.)

+ Knowledge of industry standards, building codes and safety standards.

+ Technical understanding of mission critical environments and the associated facility considerations.

+ Ability to lead multiple projects of varying timelines while managing project expectations.

+ Experience with using Bluebeam Revu and associated products.

+ Expertise with AutoCAD, and 3D BIM programs such as AutoCAD or Revit.

Hardware Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
